Claremont Residents Receive National Sierra Club Award SAN FRANCISCO – Sept. 23, 2000 – Two Claremont residents were among those receiving national awards from the Sierra Club this year. Robin and Lori Ives received the club’s Susan E. Miller award for their work with the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the organization at the chapter level. Robin Ives served on the Angeles Chapter’s executive committee several terms as member, chapter chair and chapter conservation chair. Along with being an active hike leader, he edits and, with his wife, publishes a monthly newsletter for the chapter’s Conservation Committee. He currently is vice chair (South) for the Sierra Club’s California/Nevada Regional Conservation Committee. Lori Ives edited and published the Angeles Chapter’s Schedule of Activities for nine years and still edits and publishes the Sierra Club California/Nevada Red Book, a directory of chapter and group officers and leaders for California/Nevada. She has been Communications Coordinator for Sierra Club California, including Registrar for its statewide meetings. In the last year and a half, Lori has developed and is maintaining a membership database program for use by the chapter to better track and service its members. In 1961 the couple started and chaired for several years the chapter’s basic mountaineering training course that recruited hundreds of new members into the Sierra Club. "It is hard to envision how the Angeles Chapter and the California Sierra Club could have evolved without their constant effort, diligence and intelligence," said Emil Lawton, a member of the Sierra Club California Executive Committee. The couple has previously received numerous awards from the Angeles Chapter. Lori Ives received its Special Service Award in 1991 and its Phil Bernays Service Award in 1987. Robin Ives received the chapter’s Extraordinary Achievement Award in 1984 and 1988 and its Phil Bernays Service Award in 1980. The couple received the chapter’s highest conservation honor, the Weldon Heald Conservation Award, in 1968. Robin Ives is a retired mathematics professor from Harvey Mudd College; Lori has been a professional musician and owns and operates a desktop publishing company. The Sierra Club, which was founded in 1892 by John Muir, is the country’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization. It currently has more than 600,000 members. The Angeles Chapter is the Sierra Club’s oldest and largest chapter with more than 56,000 members, and will be celebrating its 90th birthday next year.
