Spring Peeper (Chorus) Frog - Pseudacris crucifer
Description: Approx. 0.75 - 1.25" in length. Easily
identified by the dark "X" on its back. "X"
is sometimes not very perfect. Body varies through shades of
olive, yellow, brown or gray. It is not striped, mottled or spotted.
Habitat: A frog of the woodlands which are near intermittant
ponds or marshes.
Range: Northern Florida to the Canadian Maritime Provinces
and west to E. Texas and S.E. Manitoba.
Notes: Tend to form choral groups where trees or bushes
are either in the water or very nearby. Seldom seen except during
breeding season. Its voice is a high piping whistle with a single
clear note that is repeated at intervals of about a second.
Amphibians are important indicator species of healthy wetlands.
