Dedication of Shasta Alpine Lodge at Horse Camp

Dedication of Shasta Alpine Lodge at Horse Camp

The dedication of the new Lodge at Horse Camp, Mount Shasta, took place at high noon on Fourth of July, 1923. Members of the Sierra Club arrived there on the 1st of July, comprising about fifteen in the part. The crowning event was when Miss Harwood of Los Angeles stepped forward and with much vim and enthusiasm pronounced the words: "I christen thee Shasta Alpine Lodge (crash went the bottle of Shasta Ginger Ale on the stone doorway) and dedicate thee to all lovers of the great outdoors!" A farewell "America" was sung by all present and we then turned to the tables which were groaning under the prospecive mountain appetites which then pounced upon the good things provided.

The above edited excerpt is from an historical Sierra Club Circular article, complete with the original masthead. Drawing by Kim Solga, 1999.
