Wildlands at Risk Since taking office, the Bush administration has opened up an area larger than Texas and Oklahoma combined to logging, mining, and oil and gas drilling – including some of the most environmentally sensitive places – stripping protections from 10 percent of America's public lands.

The Bush Administration has long-touted the Alpine oil field on Alaska's North Slope as the "model for environmentally sensitive drilling." However, the Bureau of Land Management is poised to allow Conoco Phillips to greatly expand the current development by allowing the construction of 146 miles of gravel roads, airstrips, multiple drilling pads, and a permanent bridge structure.
